Growing Requirements For Cymbidium Orchids

While your Cymbidium is flowering, bring it inside and enjoy the beauty of the spikes.

Give your orchid a good water once or twice a week. Water at the top of the pot (it is better not to wet the foliage).

Each spike should flower from 6 weeks to 2 months.

Growing Hints

1. FLOWERING:

There are two main factors which will limit your success in flowering Cymbidium orchids:

(i) Too much shade

(ii) Insufficient temperature drop - Cymbidiums require a drop of approx 10ºc between day and night during the summer months, to initiate the formation of flower spikes. This is generally assisted by watering your plants in the late afternoon - evening from November to February.

2. LIGHT:

Plants should not be heavily shaded. Shadecloth of 25% - 50% shading, or a position in the garden where some protection from summer sun is given by a light foliaged tree.

3. WATERING:

Due to the very open potting mix watering should be every 2 or 3 days in the hot weather and once or twice per week in the Winter.

4. TEMPERATURE:

Frost will ruin flowers and flower buds, but the foliage will endure to 2ºc without any damage.

5. FERTILISER:

The simplest system is to use slow release, (Osmocote, Nutricote) fertilisers placed on top of the pot and watered in. Alternatively, regular use of soluble fertilisers suitable for orchids gives good results. HSO12 is available from Mt Warning Orchids.

6. POTTING:

Plants should either be divided or repotted into larger pots when the bulbs reach the sides of their existing pot. Cymbidium potting mix is available at most hardware stores.
